The first deadline for EQIP applications for contracts starting in 2018 is October 20, 2017. If you would like to do any pasture seeding, make sure you sign up by this first deadline or you won’t have a contract in place by the time you want to do your seeding (assuming your application ranks high enough to get funded). The second cut-off date for application won’t be until March 16, 2018.
This year, we will have a special pot of EQIP funds through an RCPP project that was awarded to Allamakee County for specific practices completed in either Allamakee County or Clayton County. This project will have EQIP funds for cropland conversion to pasture (seeding, fencing, setting up watering systems, etc.), cover crops on acres that also have manure application, and adding a small grain to a rotation (not as a nurse crop for hay). We had hoped to have a higher EQIP rate for small grains, but unfortunately that was denied. However, if this is something you are thinking of doing anyway or doing as part of a rotation with cover crops, you can sign up for both practices.
Stop by the office as soon as you can if you would like to sign up for EQIP. Many practices require design work to be completed before contracting, and we have a limited window in the fall to complete surveys.
